The Philadelphia Union is an innovative professional soccer club competing in Major League Soccer (MLS) and is one of Philadelphia’s five major league sports teams. The name “Union” was chosen to reflect Philadelphia’s place as one of America’s thirteen original colonies. The team logo echoes this theme by featuring thirteen stars around two halves of a shield, representing unity amongst all citizens within our nation. Driven by unprecedented grassroots support from a fan group known as the Sons of Ben, who petitioned for MLS to expand to the Philadelphia region, the Union was awarded expansion rights in 2008 and kicked off its inaugural season in 2010. In 2020, the Union was awarded the club’s first Supporters’ Shield after finishing with the best regular season record in MLS. In 2022, the Union reached the MLS Cup Final for the first time in club history. In 2023, the Union reached the Eastern Conference semifinals, becoming the only Eastern Conference team to reach the semifinals in four of the last five seasons. In 2025, the Union secured their second-ever Supporters’ Shield.
What is DOOP?
DOOP is a unique tradition that separates Philadelphia Union fans from the rest of the League. But what does it mean and how did it originate? Former Union CEO Nick Dakiewicz was searching for a goal-scoring anthem for the team when he chanced upon the song “Maria (I like it Loud)” which features the refrain, “doop, doop, doop”. Fans quickly embraced the tune and DOOP became an integral part of the Union’s identity. After each goal scored by the Union at Subaru Park, the song blasts from the loudspeakers as fans join in celebration by chanting in unison. This widely recognized ritual has become a much-anticipated part of every home game.
The Union play at Subaru Park in Chester, PA on the banks of the Delaware River. The custom-built stadium is part of the Union’s unique waterfront campus, featuring a historic power plant rebuilt into a 400,000 sq. ft. creative office building, a state-of-the-art Training Complex, over seven acres of professional-grade practice pitches, and the newly announced WSFS Bank Sportsplex, a world-class, 365-day-a-year sports and recreation complex featuring indoor fieldhouse and seven outdoor fields. The Philadelphia Union also operates Philadelphia Union II (their reserve affiliate team competing in MLS Next Pro), the Philadelphia Union Academy, Philadelphia Union Foundation and Philadelphia Union Youth Programs. With a commitment to developing youth, the Union has signed 25 academy prospects to homegrown player contracts.
The Philadelphia Union’s consistent performances and loyal fan base have made them a powerful and respected force in American soccer. For more information, visit philadelphiaunion.com and follow @PhilaUnion on Twitter or Instagram.
